About the Art

A Chinese youth whips a splendid white horse with a branch of willow, as he sets out upon the road. A fellow traveler waits up ahead and looks back at the dozing fisherman on the riverbank.

This print hails from the series: "A True Mirror of Chinese and Japanese Poems", published around 1833. A truly splendid series, it is known for its beautiful compositions, fine coloration and high-culture subjects. In the ten designs that he made, Hokusai depicted classical poets in landscapes that they knew or referenced in one of their poems.

The young man setting out from home was a popular theme in Chinese poetry, being used 100's of times, and the exact poem that Hokusai is referencing in this print is unknown.
