About the Art

An elegant woman sways in the face of a gust of wind of a rainy night, arching almost like a flower as the lantern in her hand is lifted away from her.

This is Osen, a server at a nearby teahouse, visiting the Shinto shrine of Kasamori-inari.

In Japanese art, the practice of mitate is the reuse of old or ancient themes in contemporary settings. In this mitate, Harunobu recreates the passing of a mysterious woman in the night originally captured 1000 years earlier in the poetry of Ki no Tsurayaki (designated as one of Japan's 36 poetry immortals).

Harunobu was known for his elegant, refined depictions of women with idealized, other-worldly qualities.
