About the Art

A wooden bridge spans a spectacular mountain pass and connects the Buddhist temple on the right with a tea-room perched on the rocky outcrop on the left. Other buildings line the mountain way, and small stones mark the temple's precincts along the side of the road.

A second bridge, this time of cloud, symbolically connects the earthly world with the heavenly realm in the sky.

Hokusai is clearly experimenting with different styles of depicting clouds in this print, creating a hybrid that incorporates elements of style from both Japanese and Western art in one. They appear unusual, not truly belonging to either Japanese or Western drawing styles at the time.

This print hails from the series "Remarkable Views of the Bridges in all the Provinces" published in 1834. Bridges were a favorite subject of Hokusai, with many fine examples in his catalog.
