About the Art

On a summer's day in 1930, a small family pauses at the foot of the bronze statue of Amida Buddha, also known as the Great Buddha at Kamakura. The inclination of the buddha's head and the woman towards each other is mirrored in the arc of the tree and by the two birds resting on the buddha's hand, creating a beautiful symmetry throughout.

Completed in 1252, the Great Buddha of the Kลtoku in Kamakura is a 13.35 meters (44 ft) tall, hollow bronze statue. It is located in the Kotaku temple in Kamakura, Kanagawa prefecture, south of Tokyo bay.

The temple compound that surrounded it was washed away by the great tsunami of 1495, but it weathered the storm and stands to this day. It's the second-tallest statue of the Buddha in Japan, and can even be viewed from the inside.
