About the Art

The skeletal ghost of tragic kabuki actor Kohada Koheiji pulls down the edge of a mosquito net protecting his wife and lover as they sleep together.

With eerie flames flickering around him, he pays the treacherous couple a haunting midnight visit.

Kohada Koheiji was a struggling kabuki actor, who due to his ghastly appearance, could never play the role of anything other than a ghost. His wife had an affair with a more successful kabuki actor, and the two conspired to drown him in the Asaka swamp, to clear the path for their passionate love.

After death, Koheiji continued to play the role he was born for, and haunted the couple to their untimely death.

This print is from the series entitled โ€˜100 Ghost Talesโ€™ (Hyaku monogatari), made for a night-time storytelling game. After each story, another wick of the oil-lamp was blown-out, and the room became darker, until the room was pitch-black. At this point, the real ghouls would emerge.

Judging from the series title, the publisher and Hokusai foresaw a series of 100 designs. However, in the end, only five are known.
