About the Art

In this charming Bijin-ga portrait, Yoshitoshi presents a traditional Chinese beauty. She is the human embodiment of the Spirit of the Plum Tree as lyricized in Chinese poetry.

Her features are in the conventionally beautiful aesthetic preferred at the time of the Chinese Tang dynasty, as evidenced by her double chin and enhanced by her ornate, flowing kimono.

This print is no.59 from Yoshitoshi's masterwork series: 100 Aspects of the Moon. In this scene, a beautiful full moon rises into the evening sky.

Yoshitoshi (่Šณๅนด, 1839-1892) is generally considered the last great master of the Japanese woodblock print (ukiyo-e), and as an innovative genius within the art form.

During his life, he produced as many as 10,000 prints in total; including many series. His career spanned a pivotal period in Japanese history, as he lived through the transition from the old feudal Japan to the beginning of the new modern Japan. Like many Japanese, while interested in new innovations from overseas, over time he became increasingly concerned with the loss of many cultural treasures from traditional Japan, among them the classic woodblock print.
