About the Art

In this print, Hasui captures one of the five highways that began in present-day Tokyo and led to famous Japanese landmarks.

Among the earth-tones of greens and browns of the cryptomeria trees lining the road, we see the yellow of a basket. A basket being carried by workman walking down a path that leads to the famous shrine in Nikko.

The use of a very dark foreground and a bright background convey a sense of accomplishment as the man makes his way to the light in the road.
