About the Art

Legendary swordsman Miyamoto Musashi plunges his sword into the back of an enormous black whale.

The text reads, “Miyamoto Musashi was born in Higo and became a retainer in Buzen. He traveled through numerous provinces perfecting his swordsmanship. Once, at sea off the coast of Hizen, he pierced an enormous right whale with his sword.”

There are few written sources for the story, but it was retold in many literary and artistic works, circulating widely. It would become known as one of the numerous tales of Musashi’s valor and martial prowess.

This print is classic Kuniyoshi, and is regarded as one of his masterpieces. He uses the triptych format to create larger-than-life drama, with the whale crashing through the waves and almost completely filling the frame, while the great Musashi is barely visible.

The fine details of the water, the whale's skin and the beautiful gradations from its back to the white of its stomach make this an exquisite print.
