About the Art

This piece was Hasui’s final work. Though he was unable to see the final print, Watanabe, his publisher, chose this final work as a celebration of the master’s prolific career in printmaking. Copies were given out during his memorial service to friends and acquaintances.

This print depicts a lone priest making his way to the Hall of Golden Hue in the snow. Though the white snow blankets most of the scene, the blue hues come through to portray the dark snowy day. We can see that the snow is still falling and will eventually cover the trees in the background. Given that Hasui created and directed the coloring of this final work of art from his death bed, the lonely walk into the darkness is both beautiful and haunting.
