About the Art

Hasui prints focus on capturing and depicting the serenity found in nature; a stark contrast to the rapid urbanization actually occurring in Japan during his lifetime.

Hasui enjoyed evoking the tranquility found in bodies of water he encountered during his travels. In addition, he liked to portray the four seasons in his prints—in this case autumn.

The orange and yellow tones offer a contrast to the deep blue of the water as the season changes. We are offered a view that we can only enjoy once a year.
