About the Art

From Selection of Scenes of Japan - a series of lighter, prettier prints that are more tranquil in mood to his previous series. Here Hasui is consciously representing "traditional Japan" with ambiguous locations that show the essence of the country, rather than famous views.

In this scene, a boat is transporting rocks in Bingo province, corresponding to modern-day Hiroshima prefecture.

Ukiyo-e historian Narazaki notes that "the treatment of the mountain and the boat exhibits a technique whereby areas on the finished woodblock are not printed. An abundance of attention has been given to detail in this work, with its light touches of color and fine lines. Perhaps Hasui was at a stylistic turning point when he produced this print."
