About the Art

In his series Twenty Views of Tokyo, Hasui returns to the capital after almost ten years lyricising the countryside. Throughout the series, he contrasts old and modern, and structures of power versus the humble abodes of more everyday citizens. This print is one of the latter, depicting a nocturnal scene from the rural suburb of Magome.

Narazaki writes of this print: "This scene conveys the rustic, "poetic" charm of Magome, the area where Hasui lived. A scene after a rain, the trunks of a few ancient pines are magnified, and we spy a clear, full moon through their branches.

The entire picture is conceived as if the dark blue sky and the land are one. A light shines in the window of a thatch-roofed farmhouse and the contrast of the light of the circular moon and that of the small rectangular window is skillful indeed."

This work is generally acknowledged as a masterpiece among Hasui's nocturnes.

Two thousand copies of this popular work were produced.
