About the Art

Hasui is known for his serene landscapes. His images were often based on quick watercolor sketches made during his travels to different scenic places in Japan. This print was inspired by his visit to a lotus pond in a Tokyo park in the summertime.

Lotuses and trees make up most of the print. However, the pink of the blooming water lilies breaks up the sea of green. In addition, the stark contrast of the brown bridge guides our wandering eyes over to the two ladies wearing ornate kimonos.

Only 100 copies of this print were produced in its first edition.
